🌿How Does Navel Acupuncture Treat Bloating & Abdominal Pain Problems ?

Digestive conditions are among the most commonly encountered issues in clinical practice.
They are widespread, closely connected to daily life, and often influenced by diet, lifestyle, emotional stress, and overall physiological rhythm.

Symptoms such as bloating, indigestion, and abdominal discomfort are rarely caused by a single organ alone. More often, they reflect an imbalance in the body’s overall digestive regulation.

From a traditional Chinese medicine perspective, the navel has a close and direct relationship with the digestive system.

Anatomically, the navel is directly connected to the peritoneal region and lies in close proximity to key digestive organs, including the stomach, spleen, liver, pancreas, small intestine, and large intestine.
It functions as an important regulatory center within the abdomen.

In the meridian system, the navel is located on the Ren Mai (Conception Vessel), known as the “Sea of Yin Meridians,” which governs the internal organs and abdominal functions.

The navel’s recessed structure is traditionally described as “yin within yin,” associated with Earth (Kun), and closely linked to spleen and digestive activity.

In navel acupuncture, different gua (trigram) positions are used to support various aspects of digestive function:

  • Kun and Gen positions are associated with spleen and stomach regulation, supporting digestion and absorption

  • Qian and Li positions relate to large and small intestinal function and abdominal flow

  • Zhen and Xun positions support liver and gallbladder regulation, promoting smooth movement and balance

Through coordinated use of these positions, navel acupuncture does not focus on suppressing a single symptom.
Instead, it works by improving overall coordination and stability within the digestive system.

In clinical practice, this regulatory approach is commonly reflected in:

  • Reduced abdominal bloating and discomfort

  • Improved digestive tolerance after meals

  • A greater sense of abdominal ease and flow

  • Enhanced stability of digestive function over time

Navel acupuncture emphasizes long-term regulation and functional recovery, rather than short-term symptom suppression.

For digestive issues that are recurrent or closely tied to daily life patterns, this approach often provides steady and meaningful support.

🌿How Many Treatments Are Usually Needed?

In clinical practice, the number of sessions needed varies depending on symptom severity, duration, recurrence, and individual response to treatment.

For common bloating and mild digestive discomfort, noticeable improvement is often experienced within 1–3 sessions.

For long-standing, recurrent, or more complex digestive issues, clearer and more stable improvement is commonly observed after 5–8 sessions.

When symptoms have persisted for a longer period, are more complex, or tend to recur, a more regular course of treatment is often recommended.

This approach supports the body in gradually establishing a stable regulatory state, rather than focusing on short-term relief alone.

In clinical experience, most patients notice some degree of change or improvement after each session.

This may include reduced bloating, improved digestive comfort, a lighter abdominal sensation, as well as greater physical relaxation, improved energy levels, and overall well-being.

🌿 Treatment Notes

Before Treatment

If you have had any recent medical tests, imaging, or are currently receiving other treatments, please inform your acupuncturist.
Please review the precautions for Navel Acupuncture before treatment

During Treatment

Sensations vary from person to person.
Mild pain or soreness during needle insertion may occur and is normal.

In general, the more relaxed you are, the milder the sensation.
Navel Acupuncture is a safe acupuncture treatment.
Please stay relaxed and avoid unnecessary tension.

After Treatment

After treatment, allow the body adequate time to rest.
Avoid returning immediately to strenuous physical activity on the same day, so the body can complete its regulatory and recovery processes.

Drinking warm or room-temperature water after treatment may help support digestive regulation and abdominal comfort.

Some patients may experience mild, temporary responses after treatment, such as changes in abdominal sensation, increased gas or bowel sounds, or mild fatigue.
These responses are generally part of the body’s adjustment process and usually resolve on their own.

If any discomfort feels unusual or persists, please contact your practitioner.

Daily Care During the Treatment Period

During the course of treatment, the following daily care measures may help stabilize results:

Keep the abdominal area warm and avoid exposure to cold

Limit cold or iced drinks, as well as overly greasy or irritating foods

Choose warm, easy-to-digest meals whenever possible

Maintain regular sleep and rest patterns, avoiding excessive fatigue

Engage in moderate, regular physical activity to support circulation and overall recovery

These supportive measures play an important role in consolidating treatment effects and helping the body maintain a more stable and sustainable digestive regulatory state.
