Cough, Asthma & Breathing Discomfort Treatment

Navel acupuncture supports systemic regulation to improve chronic or recurrent cough, wheezing, and breathing discomfort, helping restore smoother respiration and overall pulmonary balance.

Does your Cough, Wheezing & Breathing Discomfort look like this?

You CAN benefit from James Navel Acupuncture if you have one or more of the following:

Chronic or recurrent cough or asthma

  • Cough or asthma that persists over a long period and recurs repeatedly

  • May present as long-standing cough, or recurrent wheezing and breathing restriction

  • Routine examinations show no clear infection or acute pathology, yet symptoms persist

These conditions are often related to chronic regulatory imbalance, rather than a single acute episode.

✓ Cough or asthma with a clear timing pattern

  • Symptoms are minimal or very mild most of the time

  • Noticeable worsening occurs at specific times, such as
at night, in the early morning, during fixed periods, or with seasonal changes

  • Episodes follow a recognizable rhythm rather than occurring randomly

This pattern often indicates a disturbance in the body’s natural life rhythm,
rather than a problem limited to the respiratory tract alone.

✓ Chest tightness, shortness of breath, or restricted breathing without clear findings

  • A sensation of breathing being labored, restricted, or not flowing smoothly

  • Frequent chest tightness, shortness of breath, sighing, or shallow breathing

  • Disrupted breathing during sleep, sometimes with significant snoring

  • Medical examinations reveal no clear structural abnormalities

It is important to note that snoring itself is not necessarily problematic.
However, when snoring begins to affect sleep quality, breathing, or daily life,
it deserves proper attention and regulation.

🌿How Does Navel Acupuncture Treat Cough, Wheezing & Breathing Discomfort ?

In traditional Chinese medicine, there is a well-known saying:
“Asthma is difficult to treat; chronic skin conditions are difficult to treat.”

This reflects a long-standing clinical understanding that chronic cough, wheezing, and asthma-related conditions tend to be persistent, recurrent, and not easy to resolve.

However, through ongoing clinical practice with navel acupuncture, a new perspective and therapeutic pathway has gradually emerged for these conditions.

From a traditional Chinese medicine perspective, chronic cough, wheezing, and breathing discomfort are not solely problems of the lungs, but are often related to disordered qi movement, impaired ascending and descending functions, mixed cold–heat patterns, and a reduced capacity for overall regulation.

Navel acupuncture works primarily through the Shenque (CV8) point, which is regarded as a central hub connecting congenital and acquired regulation. Shenque has deep and stable relationships with the respiratory system, immune regulation, and the body’s overall life rhythm.

Clinically, navel acupuncture does not focus simply on “stopping cough” or “relieving wheezing.”
Instead, it supports the body in re-establishing a more orderly breathing rhythm and internal regulatory balance through systemic regulation.

The main clinical focus usually includes:

  • Improving the smoothness and rhythm of breathing rather than suppressing isolated symptoms

  • Supporting the ascending and descending movement of qi so that respiratory function becomes more coordinated

  • Enhancing the body’s adaptability to environmental and seasonal changes

For these reasons, in cases of chronic cough, wheezing, and breathing discomfort, navel acupuncture often demonstrates stable and sustained clinical improvement, offering a practical and supportive regulatory approach for conditions traditionally regarded as difficult to manage.

🌿How Many Treatments Are Usually Needed?

Chronic cough, wheezing, and breathing discomfort usually develop over a long period of time,
and treatment is therefore typically approached through a course of care, rather than a single session.

In general:

After 5–10 treatments, many patients notice clear improvement

For more severe, recurrent, or long-standing conditions,
a longer period of ongoing regulation is often needed

The exact number of treatments is adjusted according to individual response, rather than following a fixed preset plan.

Clinically, each treatment session usually brings some degree of improvement or change.

🌿 Treatment Notes

Before Treatment

If you have had any recent medical tests, imaging, or are currently receiving other treatments, please inform your acupuncturist.
Please review the precautions for Navel Acupuncture before treatment

During Treatment

Sensations vary from person to person.
Mild pain or soreness during needle insertion may occur and is normal.

In general, the more relaxed you are, the milder the sensation.
Navel Acupuncture is a safe acupuncture treatment.
Please stay relaxed and avoid unnecessary tension.

After Treatment

After treatment, allow the body adequate time to rest.
Avoid returning immediately to strenuous activity on the same day.

Drinking warm water after treatment may help support overall regulation.
Please avoid excessive fatigue, exposure to cold air, wind, or sudden temperature changes, especially involving the chest, neck, and respiratory tract.

Some patients may experience mild, temporary responses such as changes in breathing sensation, light chest discomfort, or transient fatigue.
These responses are generally part of the body’s adjustment process and usually resolve on their own.
If any discomfort feels unusual or persistent, please contact your practitioner.

From a traditional Chinese medicine perspective, chronic cough, wheezing, and breathing discomfort are often associated with long-term exposure to cold, internal weakness of the Lung system, and impaired regulation.

During the treatment period, it is recommended to:

  • Keep the body warm, especially the chest and upper back

  • Avoid excessive intake of cold or iced drinks, alcohol, and cold foods

  • Prefer warm or room-temperature foods and beverages

  • Engage in moderate, regular physical activity to support circulation and respiratory function

These supportive measures play an important role in stabilizing treatment outcomes and supporting long-term respiratory balance.
