Insomnia & Sleep Problems
with Navel Acupuncture
Navel Acupuncture works by helping the body release tension, restore regulation, and gradually return to a more natural sleep rhythm.
Does Your Insomnia & Sleep Problems Feel Like This?
You CAN benefit from James Navel Acupuncture if you have one or more of the following:

✓ Difficulty falling asleep
-
Unable to fall asleep despite feeling tired
-
Lying in bed for a long time before falling asleep
-
An active or racing mind at night
-
The harder you try to sleep, the more alert you feel
Many patients describe this as:
“My body is exhausted, but my mind just won’t switch off.”

✓Menopause-related sleep problems
-
Sleep changes around menopause
-
Difficulty falling or staying asleep
-
Night sweats or heat sensations
-
Palpitations or restlessness at night
-
Increased emotional sensitivity
-
Many women notice that sleep quality changes clearly around menopause, even if sleep was previously normal.

✓Waking easily or frequent dreams
-
Light sleep, frequent waking, or vivid dreams
-
Waking multiple times during the night
-
Shallow, unrefreshing sleep
-
Frequent or intense dreams
-
Waking too early and unable to return to sleep
Patients often say:
“I sleep, but it never feels deep or restorative.”

✓Disrupted sleep rhythm
-
Night owl habits, shift work, or irregular schedules
-
Feeling alert late at night
-
Difficulty falling asleep at conventional hours
-
Sleeping better during the day than at night
-
Long-term night shifts or irregular routines
-
Patients often feel that their sleep schedule is “out of sync”, rather than simply poor.

✓Waking at the same time every night
-
Fixed-time waking (e.g. 1–3am, 3–5am)
-
Waking at almost the same time every night
-
The timing feels precise rather than random
-
Sleep does not fully recover even if you go to bed earlier
Patients commonly report:
“I don’t know why, but I always wake up at the same time.”
🌿How Does Navel Acupuncture Treat Insomnia & Sleep Problems?
What is the root cause of insomnia?
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the core mechanism of insomnia can be summarized in one sentence:
Yang does not enter Yin, and the mind cannot return to rest.
At night, the body should naturally transition from activity into rest and repair.
When this process is disrupted, internal systems remain overly active, making true sleep difficult.
From a modern perspective, this often corresponds to nervous system overactivation, circadian rhythm disruption, or impaired self-regulation.
Different explanations, same conclusion:the body’s natural regulatory ability is compromised.
What is the treatment principle of Navel Acupuncture?
Navel Acupuncture does not aim to force sleep.
Its principle is to rebalance qi, blood, yin, and yang, allowing the internal systems to return to proper coordination — so the mind can naturally settle.
When regulation is restored, sleep becomes possible without suppression or sedation.
Why does Navel Acupuncture have a unique advantage for insomnia?
The navel, known in TCM as Shenque (CV8), is a central regulatory hub closely related to internal balance, rhythm, and mental stability.
Clinically, many insomnia patients present with:
Abdominal tension or rigidity
Difficulty fully relaxing
Sleep disturbances closely linked to timing or emotional state
Fixed-time waking during the night often reflects system-level rhythm imbalance, rather than isolated sleep disturbance.
Navel Acupuncture works directly at this regulatory and rhythm level, rather than targeting sleep symptoms alone.
What is the clinical goal?
The goal of Navel Acupuncture is not to make you sleep,
but to help your body regain its natural ability to:
Be awake when it should be awake
Rest when it should rest
Repair when it should repair
When regulation returns, sleep follows naturally.
🌿How Many Treatments Are Usually Needed?
Each person’s sleep problem is different. The treatment plan and frequency are adjusted based on individual condition and response.
In many cases of general insomnia, noticeable changes can often be observed within about three treatment sessions, such as:
Falling asleep more easily
Fewer awakenings during the night
Deeper or more restful sleep
For individuals with long-standing or more severe insomnia,
those with disrupted daily rhythms, or coexisting chronic conditions,a more systematic and sustained course of treatment is usually required to gradually restore the body’s natural regulatory capacity.
Treatment is adjusted according to individual response, rather than following a fixed or mechanical number of sessions.
🌿 Treatment Notes
Before Treatment
Please review the precautions for Navel Acupuncture before treatment.
If you have had any recent medical tests, imaging, or are currently receiving other treatments, please inform your acupuncturist.
During Treatment
Sensations during acupuncture vary from person to person.
Mild discomfort, soreness, or pressure during insertion may occur and is considered normal.
In general, the more relaxed the body is, the milder the sensation.
Navel Acupuncture is a safe treatment. Please remain relaxed and avoid unnecessary tension during the session.
After Treatment
After treatment, allow yourself adequate time to rest and avoid returning immediately to strenuous activity.
Drinking warm water may help support overall regulation.
On the day of treatment, please avoid excessive exertion and exposure to cold or wind.
In some cases, patients may experience temporary fatigue or mild localized discomfort after treatment.
These responses usually resolve on their own.
If significant discomfort occurs, please contact your acupuncturist.
For sleep-related concerns, it is recommended to follow natural sleep rhythms as much as possible.
Going to bed earlier—ideally before 11:00 pm—may better support the body’s night-time regulation.
Please try to reduce stimulation before sleep, such as excessive screen use, overthinking, or mentally demanding activities.
Creating a calm pre-sleep routine can help the body settle more smoothly.
Maintaining a regular daily routine and reducing evening stimulation may support sleep recovery.
Simple practices such as gentle stretching, relaxed breathing, or quiet sitting can help the body gradually settle.
When conditions allow, spending time in natural environments—such as sunlight, fresh air, greenery, or open spaces—may further support emotional stability and sleep regulation.
